Batting Order or Disorder?

The IPL 2009 has star studded batting line-ups. However, the 20 over format has created headaches for teams such Mumbai Indians, and today the Chargers who lost because some of the big hitters did not get in early enough.

In such a case, as mentioned in my blogs earlier, in T20s their is danger that a batting side may not play itself in. So the question to be tracked is, should we look at batting line-ups as an order or should we be prepared to disorder it. It is a tough one, since batting is sequenced, and batters can only come in at the fall of a wicket, whereas bowlers- although not simulataneous in participation- can be shuffled around. (explained in Dot Chess)

IPL Cricket T20, 2009

This IPL T20 in South Africa seems interesting, since most teams have had to work hard for even maintaining a run-a-ball strike rate on account of sluggish pitches (quite unlike South Africa for outsiders). Batting sides have had to mix caution and aggression, and it is usually not too easy to just assume that big shots will be a natural outcome, if wickets are in hand.

In ODIs (50 overs), it is often the case that a side may be in danger of getting all out before the stipulated quota of overs. In T20, this may happen as well, albeit rarely. But the bigger danger in T20 is that a batting side may not play itself in!

Track why Mumbai Indians have the highest net run rate (which means over for over, they are doing great) but are struggling to hang in to secure a place in the semi finals. They just did not get their doze of flukes and lucky shots earlier in their tournament, and have been clinical in chases, without the big shots.
